Transitional Housing Facility for Homeless Individuals with AIDS Opens in Anacostia

WASHINGTON, DC - In the spirit of World AIDS Day, the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) proudly announces its financial support of the Brian Buckmon Transitional Multi-Service Center, a transitional housing facility for homeless individuals with HIV/AIDS.

DHCD provided $400,000 in gap financing to the Safe Haven Outreach Ministry, Inc to help offset the cost of establishing the Buckmon House. The facility’s grand opening ceremony will be held from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, December 2, 1999, at 2125 18th Street, SE. Invited speakers include Othello Mahone, Interim Director of the Department of Housing and Community Development; DC Councilmember Jim Graham; and Milton Bailey, Executive Director of the Housing Finance Authority.

The 33-bed facility will be a 24-hour transitional housing center for homeless and low-income individuals (and their children) who suffer from dual or triple diagnoses of a mental health condition, substance abuse addiction, or HIV/AIDS. Individuals can stay at the Buckmon House from 18 to 24 months and will have access to various support services that are designed to foster self-sufficiency.

“Our department has several programs that support individuals with special needs, including those suffering from AIDS and homelessness,” said Mahone. “These individuals are an integral part our community, and this department is committed to funding programs and projects that help improve their quality of life.”
