Citizens Get a Chance to tell DHCD Officials What Housing and Community Development Needs Exist in Their Communities

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is holding three public hearings for citizens to express their views about the department’s current performance in meeting housing and community development needs and provide suggestions on what DHCD officials can do to meet the emerging housing and community development issues in their neighborhoods.

Public hearings will be held at 6:30 pm on the following days:

  • Monday, December 20, 1999 at Barry Farms Recreation Center, 1230 Sumner Road, SE
  • Tuesday, December 21, 1999 at Masonic Temple Building, 1000 U Street, NW
  • Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at Marshall Heights CDC, Boardroom, 3939 Benning Road, NE

"Every neighborhood in this city is unique and has its own set of needs," says Othello Mahone, Interim Director of the Department of Housing and Community Development. "We encourage all citizens to attend the meetings, and let us know what is important to their neighborhoods, how our department is meeting their neighborhoods’ needs, and what our department can do to help revitalize their neighborhoods."

DHCD will also utilize the input from the public hearings, consistent with the city’s economic development strategy, to draft the Consolidated Plan for the District of Columbia 2001 – 2005. This plan outlines the initiatives and projects DHCD will support over the next five years, which will be in line with Mayor Anthony Williams’ Neighborhood Action plan. The plan will be submitted to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for the following federal entitlement programs: Community Development Block Grant Program, HOME Investment Partnerships Program, Emergency Shelter Grants Program, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program.

During the hearings, citizens can also provide comments on the Proposed Amendments to the Citizen Participation Plan, which was revised to closely conform to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines. Citizens who need a copy of the document should call (202) 442-7250.
