Tsega Bekele, Chief of Staff

Tsegazeab (“Tsega”) Bekele currently serves as the Chief of Staff at the Department of Housing and Community Development, the District’s primary agency focused on the production and preservation of affordable housing, the creation of homeownership opportunities, and the revitalization of neighborhoods through community development and economic opportunity. 

Mr. Bekele’s duties include the stewardship of the District’s Housing Production Trust Fund ($100M+ fund providing gap subsidy for the production and preservation of affordable housing), efforts to reclaim and transform vacant and blighted property, and the Inclusionary Zoning program.  In previous roles with the District government, Mr. Bekele has served as a special assistant in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development where he led city-driven, mixed-use real estate projects and as legislative counsel to the Council of the District of Columbia’s Committee on Economic Development.  Mr. Bekele received his Bachelor’s degree from Yale University and law degree from the George Washington University Law School.
