District to Hold 9th Annual Fair Housing Symposium; HUD Assistant Secretary Trasviña Guest Speaker

Symposium will be held Tuesday, April 6 from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the True Reformer Building, located at 1200 U Street, NW.

(Washington, DC) – The DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), in partnership with the DC Office of Human Rights (OHR) and the Equal Rights Center (ERC), will host the District’s 9th Annual Fair Housing Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6.  The event will be held at the True Reformer Building at 1200 U Street, NW.

Held in recognition of National Fair Housing Month, this year’s theme is “Furthering Fair Housing: Pathway to Opportunity.” The symposium is an educational forum for public and private fair housing advocates, community-based organizations, residential rental professionals, residential lending professionals, fair housing advocates, government and non-government direct service providers and all those interested in learning more about fair housing.

HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity John D. Trasviña will deliver the keynote speech. The Symposium will feature three panel discussions focused on relevant issues affecting fair housing for all persons. The panel “To Further and Affirm: A Fair Housing Mandate” will take a look at the roles local public and private entities play in affirmatively furthering fair housing. The second panel, “Fair Housing Makes Good Mortgage, Lending, Real Estate Sense,” will focus on local initiatives and projects aimed at preventing predatory lending. The final panel, “The Integration Debate: Competing Futures for American Cities,” will explore the issue of integration, and the direct and indirect affect it has on fair housing.

Admission to the symposium is free. The public is welcome to attend. Seating is limited and registration in required. Breakfast and lunch will be available for registered attendees.
