DHCD provided a vacant lot to The Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo, where students building a home and learning valuable vocational skills.

(Washington, DC) – WTTG Fox 5 featured the Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo during Fox 5 Morning News on March 23.  Reporter Holly Morris spent the morning on site at 5734 13th Street NW, where students in the Academy are learning valuable vocational trades and constructing a student-built home.

The DC Department of Housing and Community Development donated this lot to the DC Students Construction Trades Foundation (the Foundation).  The Foundation worked with Cardozo to provide the lot to the Academy, which provides technical education in vocational trades including carpentry, electrical and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration.

Students in the Academy will build a 2,000 square foot home on the donated site.  The property will be sold at market rate at an anticipated value of approximately $400,000.  Proceeds from the sale of the program will be reinvested into the Foundation and into the next student construction site.

By donating this property to the Foundation, DHCD was able to put a property back into productive use, eliminate slum and blight, and provide opportunities for students to learn vocational skills that can translate into careers.
