Landlords are fighting a legal battle against D.C.'s ban on eviction filings. A judge will eventually decide whether the moratorium violates their constitutional rights.

D.C. has the strongest tenant protections related to evictions in the region, surpassing even the federal eviction ban, but some local landlords are trying to get lawmakers to water them down.

The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) has provided more than $6.4 million in financing from the Housing Production Trust Fund (HPTF) to produce 26 new homeownership units in in the Twining neighborhood of Ward 7.

“This is another project that helps us move toward 12,000 new affordable housing units by 2025,” said DHCD Director Polly Donaldson. “It's also the culmination of consistent engagement between the community, the developer and our team. We're excited to invest in affordable homeownership opportunities in this neighborhood.”

“Whenever we invest in a community, it's important that longtime residents know that our resources are available to assist them,” said DHCD Director Polly Donaldson. “Every affordable unit that's preserved gives tenants a stronger connection to the community they call home.”

District residents cannot be evicted for the duration of the public health emergency plus sixty days; nor can they be charged late fees for the duration of the public health emergency. Unless extended, the public health emergency ends on Friday, October 9.
