The DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD)'s will host the Rental Accommodations Workshop: What to Know Before You Rent: Rent Control & Rent Adjustments for Small Housing Providers in-person or virtually on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 from 12 pm to 2 pm. This workshop will provide housing providers, property managers, and realtors an overview of rent control, rent adjustments, the requirements for leasing and renting, and an opportunity for a Q&A.

Workshop Topics:This workshop will cover the following topics:

  • a due diligence before renting a housing accommodation or unit
  • obligation to provide a safe and sanitary housing accommodation or rental unit and implied warranty of habitability
  • licensing, registration, and inspection requirements
    • difference between a housing accommodation and an Airbnb unit
  • determining if a housing accommodation is market or rent-controlled
  • common first year rent adjustments for rent-controlled housing accommodations or rental units
  • security deposits and a housing provider’s right to access
  • written tenant disclosures
  • when a housing provider wants to evict a tenant
