Thursday, September 2, 2010
Located at the corner of Good Hope Road, SE, and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE, the site has high visibility in Ward 8’s Historic Anacostia neighborhood.

Anacostia Mural(Washington, DC) – The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), along with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, collaborated with Ward 8 residents to design a mural to transform the façade of the vacant property located at 1201 Good Hope Road, SE.

Located at the corner of Good Hope Road, SE, and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE, the site has high visibility in Ward 8’s Historic Anacostia neighborhood.

DHCD held several community stakeholder roundtable discussions with residents and community leaders to discuss the feasibility of installing the temporary mural to remove the blight associated with the location while the department works to identify a redevelopment plan for the property.

Local artist Billy Colbert and a group from the District’s Summer Youth Employment Program developed the concept and constructing elements for the mural which include sustainable and recycled materials.

Installation of the mural is expected to begin in early October and is estimated to take one week to complete. A dedication will be planned for October.
