D.C. Procures $300M in Financing to Preserve 102 Affordable Homes

The D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development has closed several loans from the Oramenta Newsome Predevelopment Loan Program, which offers nonprofit developers and housing cooperatives access to capital for predevelopment costs, for three affordable housing projects in Wards 5, 7, and 8.

The loan program, named in honor of Oramenta Newsome, a key D.C. housing advocate who died in February 2018, was established by Mayor Muriel Bowser with $1 million in funding from the Housing Production Trust Fund and $1 million from D.C. Housing Finance Agency.

Tenants Should Assert Rights During COVID-19 Crisis, Advocates Say

While the D.C. Council and the mayor have instituted measures to protect renters in the District during the COVID-19 crisis, tenants should be vigilant in protecting their rights, a housing advocate and legal practitioner said.

The council passed legislation on March 17 that prohibits evictions and late fees for renters while the state of emergency and the public health state of emergency exists. In supplemental legislation, rent increases for all residential properties during the emergency and 30 days afterward are also prohibited…..

The microgrants were one piece of District economic relief addressed by Bowser at the April 29th COVID-19 Situational update, which also focused on rent relief and questions about monthly billing for services prohibited by the public health emergency….

DC expands small business microgrant program with additional $8M

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced more than $8 million in additional funds for D.C. Small Business Recovery Microgrants Program.

The city has already invested $25 million in the fund to provide relief to local small businesses for expenses including employee wages and benefits, rent, and other operating costs. The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) has since received over 7,000 applications for the grant program.

D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine lambasted those looking to make a buck by taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic….

Bowser announced Wednesday more than $8 million in additional support for the DC Small Business Recovery Microgrants Program.

“We began with $25 million, and have since been able to identify an additional $8 million for the program — $4 million from Events DC and over $1 million from DHCD (Department of Housing and Community Development) and $3 million in federal funds,” Bowser said.

In order to reach Mayor Muriel Bowser’s goal of 36,000 new units of housing built by 2025, the District relies on several different agencies to work in tandem to achieve that number. This can be done with the creation and/or preservation of affordable housing, bolstering homeownership opportunities, and revitalizing neighborhoods.

A new affordable housing project on the eastern edge of D.C. is moving forward.
Neighborhood Development Co. secured financing this week for a 63-unit project with 4K SF of retail at 1100 Eastern Ave. NE. It plans to break ground next month and deliver the project in 2021.
