DC cuts ribbon on new affordable housing for older residents

D.C. has officially opened a new housing development that is part of an initiative to increase the amount of affordable housing in the District by 12,000 units by 2025.

Fortitude at Delta Towers, at 808 Bladensburg Road Northeast, contains 179 affordable housing units and includes 18 permanent supportive housing units for older residents, according to Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office in a release Thursday.

The development aims to provide housing to residents age 55 and older.

In July, Julie Gilgoff reported on several municipalities that are exploring legislation that would give tenants the first right of purchase to preserve affordable housing. The proposed legislation is based on Washington, D.C.’s Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), which was enacted in 1980. As manager of a TOPA program at a D.C.-based organization, I want to discuss factors that will facilitate or hinder the implementation of a program that allows tenants to cooperatively purchase their homes.

D.C. officials will hand out grants to some landlords to forgive back rents and stay afloat financially while the pandemic drags on.

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on Monday a new $10 million fund for these “Housing Stabilization Grants,” targeting them to owners of affordable properties and other small buildings around the city. Of the total, $9 million will be set aside for affordable projects, and $1 million for owners of 20 units or fewer.

The grants will cover up to 80% of rent arrears for each tenant that has fallen behind on rent, up to $2,000 per unit, per month.

D.C. Offers Two Low- to Moderate-Income Homes for Sale in Historic Anacostia

In September, two homes on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in southeast D.C. were rehabilitated as part of an effort to transform and make available for purchase, formerly vacant and blighted properties in the historic Anacostia community.

At that time, D.C. Housing and Community Development Director Polly Donaldson also previewed an adjacent 15,000-square-foot lot designed for the construction of three single-family, semi-detached homes with private driveways.

Mayor Bowser Announces 1,000 Affordable Housing Units Created or Preserved Through FY20 Housing Trust Fund Investment

Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that at the close of its 2020 Fiscal Year (FY20) the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) committed more than $104.5 million from the Housing Production Trust Fund (HPTF) to 22 projects that will create or preserve more than 1,000 affordable housing units for District residents.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on Wednesday that over $104.5 million has been committed by the Department of Housing and Community Development to 22 affordable housing projects in the 2020 fiscal year.

The funding, sourced from the Housing Production Trust Fund, will facilitate the creation or maintenance of over 1,000 affordable housing units.

“Our commitment to producing and preserving affordable housing in Washington, D.C. has not waivered during the public health emergency,” Mayor Bowser said.
